“When this study began in the middle of the 1988 flat season I had no intention of publishing books of any sort, it was done purely for interest but since then like Topsy the project has grown and grown. At the start handicap races were included, but this was quickly abandoned, I very soon discovered that betting on these races would have rapidly led to the poorhouse. The purpose of the study is to analyse the fortunes of favourites in all non-handicap flat races during this 18½ year period, nationally well over 30,000 races have been examined, each course has been studied in detail, and the findings laid out in a clear concise manner.”
